  • Celebrating Oral Health Month – Share Your Smile

Celebrate Great Oral Health and Help Create Good Habits

With summer just getting into full swing, our team at Paquette Orthodontics invite you to join us in celebrating Oral Health Month in June! A big motivator in making June the nation’s official Oral Health Month is making more kids and families realize just how important healthy teeth and gums are to their future happiness and well-being. Healthy mouths make happy smiles, and everyone should feel comfortable showing their pearly whites for the whole world to see.

During the month of June, families are encouraged to take a picture of themselves brushing, flossing, and showing their excitement about taking good care of their teeth and gums, and to share their pictures with the tag #TimetoSmile.

The best time to introduce good oral hygiene habits is when children are young, around when they are first old enough to brush their teeth on their own. Habits that are instilled at an early age are likely to be continued into adulthood, and getting into a good dental hygiene regimen early will also help to prevent issues from developing. As people age, their body’s ability to fight off problems like plaque, gum disease, and even possible bone loss lessens, and so starting these good habits as early as possible can help keep teeth and gums healthy for decades to come.

Here is an oral health regimen you can teach your children to make sure their smiles stay beautiful:

    1. Use fluoride toothpaste and an American Dental Association (ADA)-approved toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles.
    2. The ADA recommends brushing for 2 full minutes at least twice a day, but preferably after every meal.
    3. Gently brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle towards the gumline. Make sure to get the entire surface of each tooth: the outside, the chewing surface, and the inside.
    4. Move the toothbrush in a small circular motion. This cleans more effectively than a side-to-side motion.
    5. The ADA also recommends flossing at least once a day. Floss picks or waterpiks can help to get into those hard to reach places.
    6. Using antimicrobial fluoride mouthwashes not only keeps breath fresh but also kills germs and bacteria that create plaque, tooth decay, gingivitis, and gum disease.
    7. Replace toothbrushes (or replaceable heads) every 3-4 months. If you have been sick, replace them as soon as you get better; cold germs and other bacteria can live for DAYS on your toothbrush, which can get you sick again.

To help your children get excited about taking good care of their teeth and gums, here are some printable materials from the ADA about how to brush effectively, a calendar to help keep track of their brushing habits, and a fun coloring sheet!
